A Big Improvement

Thanks to all who remembered Samuel over the weekend, we came into his room about 9.30 this morning to find him wide-eyed, alert, and looking more his normal self. It was a so lovely to see him really looking intently at us for the first time and being awake without screwing up his face, going all red and having a big cry from the pain. The oedema (abnormal accumulation of fluid beneath the skin) that had him looking so puffy and uncomfortable by the end of last week started to subside over the weekend as we were hoping and praying it would. He lost about 400mls of fluid through the diaretics that increased his urine output dramatically, but he still has more to come off in the coming days before his next scheduled operation this Thursday. The doctor's round was about 9.30am as usual and everyone seemed happy with the changes last week and it was agreed to take him off the small amount of morphine he was still on, and extubate him from the ventilator that has been supporting his breathing since his previous operation last Tuesday.

His breathing has gradually improved to the point where he was only minimally using the ventilator, and although he'll need to be intubated again before the next operation, at least he'll have a few days without a pipe down his throat and able to make noises again. We were hoping that he'd be able to breathe just with a 'low-flow' oxygen via small tubes into the nose but as you can see in the video clip, he was still having to work a little too hard so it was decided to put him back on CPAP as before.

He is looking so much better than last week and we're looking forward to seeing him get rid of the rest of the excess fluid and his abdomen reducing in size as it is currently still quite distended. He's still on 1 ml of breast milk every 2 hours and over the coming week we're hoping to see some fecal matter coming out of his stoma into the colostomy bag to indicate some function in the small intestine. Otherwise Samuel's 4th Monday was fairly uneventful, normally he has a constant stream of surgical teams / specialists paying him visits but today it was unusually quiet on that front. We'll be back tomorrow with another update so stay tuned.....
